Steel Balls / Ball BearingsAmazing Magnets stocks three types of steel balls (440C Stainless Steel, Chrome Steel, and Nickel Plated Steel). 440C and Chrome Steel Balls are both Grade 25, and are bearing quality. Nickel plated steel balls are made of a softer steel and are sold by Amazing Magnets specifically for use in Magnetic Sculptures. Additional sizes and materials can be produced if required.
440C Stainless Steel Balls
440C Stainless is a magnetic grade of stainless steel. It holds up well in harsh elements, but they are not rust proof. 440C Stainless Steel Balls are not magnets, however they are magnetic.
Chrome Steel Balls
All of the Chrome Steel Balls below are 52100 alloy steel, Grade 25. 52100 is a low alloy steel containing high levels of carbon and chromium, that is hardened and generally used as bearings. For the magnetic sculpture artist, these balls make great flexible joints, and juction points.
Nickle Plated Steel Balls
Nickel Plated Steel Balls are made of a low grade steel, which is plated in Nickel to give them a brillant shiny finish. These are the joints and junction points of a magnet sculpture. Since they are Nickel plated they last very well in most moist conditions, with the exception of salt, which will cause them to pit and corrode. These should not be used for load bearings as they do not have the hardness required.
